Interview with Ashwin Joharpurkar

Ashwin Joharpurkar is a one man Independent Studio venturing into the Design scene in India. An Advertising Professional & Graphic Designer, he takes inspiration from day to day life, politics, humor and creates simple yet thoughtful designs. Here is a little more about him in his Kulture Shop Studio interview.

KS: What kind of work do you do?

Ashwin: I do illustrations as a hobby to tell stories I like. We all have many ideas but we hardly execute it. I think putting those ideas on the paper makes me happy. Also, I like simplicity and I work hard to bring that in my illustrations. I believe that one can make complicated stuff but the hard part is doing the same thing minimally.

KS: Tell us more about your favourite project from the past year.

Ashwin: The project I am really proud is the Freedom Fighters posters I did. I always looked up to Bhagat Singh. So when I wanted to put up one of his posters in my living room, I looked it up on the net as everyone does but couldn't find any decent poster. That’s when I decided to make one myself. After I illustrated Bhagat Singh, I showed it to a few of my friends and they loved it. This encouraged me to work on Lokmanya Tilak, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi and Chatrapati Shivaji. These posters are printed using the Silk Screen printing method to so that one can feel the ink on the paper.

KS: Tell us more about some of your artwork available at Kulture Shop.

Ashwin: The idea of this illustration came to my mind when I was working late one night in the office for a pitch. While working in tense situations, I came to realise that no matter how much pressure you have, if you stay happy, things become easier. So I imagined the situation of an astronaut who is lonely on the moon. With just a few machines for company on a lonely unfamiliar planet. How will he stay happy? How will he stay sane? Being crazy is the only answer.
