Thank you for being our esteemed client. Now that you have your print, we want to ensure that you have all the information you need to keep your art safe and in great condition so that you can enjoy it for many years to come. Works of art on paper or canvas are by tendency fragile and the aging of a print is a natural chemical and biological process. Pls remember these works on paper or canvas are living, breathing things, and they need to be handled with care and framed properly, no matter how much you’re spending on it. It’s very worth it for the long-term value.

What are "Giclée Prints"?

Giclée prints provide better colour accuracy than other means of reproduction. This ink-jet process uses the highest archival quality paper and ink. The quality of the giclée print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

Unpacking & Handling

Extra care must always be taken when unpacking and handling prints as they are highly prone to scratches and fingerprints. Removing the work from the provided packaging without gloves could cause irreparable damage to it, e.g. a visible fingerprint could leave a so-called “moon”. When handling your print, try and touch the paper as little as possible and avoid touching the image area entirely. Should you need to handle your print, use both hands and hold it by opposite corners, very gently, to avoid creasing. Always try to wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your print.

Mounting, Framing & Where To Hang

Good quality mounting and framing is one of the most effective methods of preserving and caring for works of art on paper. For framing acid-free aka pH neutral mat/mount, backing and tapes should be used. This is to avoid any moisture reaching print and damaging it. Consider UV glass/acrylic for protection against light. Acrylic aka plexiglass is also offered with UV light absorbers; it cannot break, is less expensive, causes no condensation and is largely non-reflecting. An important detail worth mentioning is that prints should not have any direct contact with the glass/acrylic so a window mat/mount or spacers should always be used to create distance between the surface of the print and the glass/acrylic.

Hang your prints away from very busy and possibly messy areas. Over time, prints can accumulate a thin layer of dust and pollutants, airborne grime from cooking oils, particles from smoking and insect specks. If there is a place to display prints away from these things, or where it will be somewhat less exposed, try to position it there. Dust your prints with a clean, soft rag (old used cloth, preferably cotton) occasionally to prevent dust buildup, do not use new/thick/rough/textured clothes or any other material to remove the dust from the surface of the print. Don't use cleaning products or water!

P.S. -Do not frame prints on canvas under glass/acrylic, because canvas needs to breathe, if it is framed under glass you may trap moisture inside the frame. Canvases experience small, subtle shifts over time due to mild atmospheric changes, so it is best to leave them without glass/acrylics to allow them to flow with these slight changes.

Do never trim a print by cutting off its white margins or parts of it. Typically, these white margins are included intentionally by the artist during making the artwork and printing it. It’s essential for framing and also ensures the value of your print.

Light -All light fades print with time. The less amount of direct light, the less fading will occur. These prints are for Interior use only, therefore should not be hung exposed to direct or harsh sunlight. If exposed to extreme heat or sunlight over long periods of time, paper can become brittle and reach a point where it simply crumbles to the touch.

Temperature & Heat -Try to avoid subjecting your prints to extreme changes in atmosphere. Avoid excessive dryness, humidity, heat or cold. Don't hang prints near areas that get too hot or cold, like fireplaces, radiators, or air-conditioners. Warm or moist conditions accelerate deterioration and encourage mold growth and insect activity. Extreme temperature fluctuations cause expansion and contractions of paper and makes it uneven.

Humidity - Constant high humidity produces mold spores – a major cause in the deterioration of any paper and  also causes prints to wave or warp. A permanent low humidity can dry out paper and make it brittle. Don’t hang or store prints in damp areas with poor circulation. In Case if moisture collects or fungus develops, keep the frame in sunlight for 1 hour/ day for a week Or in the absence of sunlight use a hot air blower like hair drier for 10 minutes on low heat.

P.S. - In coastal areas or hilly regions, if the walls are developing fungus due to humidity and moisture due to continuous rains, there are chances of fungus spreading to the frame. It would be wise to fix small rubber bush behind the frame on four corners so that there is no direct contact between the wall and the frame. It is always advisable to have print with glass frames in these areas.

Proper Storage

If your print is not on display, the best way to keep it safe and looking great is to store it flat inside of a rigid folder where it can be protected from light, dirt and humidity while being stored. The best preservation for your art print is not to frame them, and keep them in cabinets, folders or collector boxes instead. Special metal cabinets for storing prints are expensive but best. Metal cabinets are better than wooden ones because metal has no chemical emissions. The prints should never be stored in a way that two prints are in direct contact with each other. Put each  print into a separate folder of acid-free paper and store them in a flat position.

The transportation of prints requires excellent packaging. Your print can be transported flat or rolled depending on its size, Wrap your print well if you plan to transport it. Be sure to put a heavy piece of stiff cardboard over the front and back to protect it. Print should be fixed in a way to prevent sliding and rubbing against the packing materials – we suggest a soft wrapping paper/butter paper or very smooth, non-abrasive tissue . Then bubble wrap and place in a suitable heavy cardboard box. Not all prints can be rolled. If the paper is too thick and not pliable enough it might break. Be careful when you consider rolling print and take it out of the packaging immediately after it arrived at its destination. Leave enough space between the margins of the prints and the edge of the protecting boards. Remember: The secret of safe print transportation is to prevent the prints from sliding inside the package during transport. Rough handling can damage both the print and the frame so pack it securely.

Printing and color variations?

Due to the nature of screen to print resolution, please be aware that some color variations might occur.

What are "Giclée Prints"?

Giclée prints provide better colour accuracy than other means of reproduction. This ink-jet process uses the highest archival quality paper and ink. The quality of the giclee print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

What types of material and framing options do you offer?

You can read everything about our art products here ART OPTIONS GUIDE.

Art Prints Care

To prevent fading or color distortion, it’s best to hang your paper print in a cool, dry space and out of direct sunlight.

Remove dust by using either compressed air or by brushing lightly with a soft, lint-free, microfiber cloth.

Never use water or cleaning products of any kind to clean your paper print, as they will cause the inks to fade / run. Framing is always a good option to protect art prints from dust, water damage, and tears.

Always handle your art print by its edges. Hold each side equally to avoid bends and dimples.

Never stack anything on top of your paper print.

Giclée (Archival) Prints & Canvas Prints Care

Giclée (Archival) and Canvas prints are extremely delicate, so avoid touching the print surface with bare hands as the moisture and oils from your skin can affect print quality. To avoid damage hold prints by the edge or were cotton gloves while holding them.

Be careful not to scuff or scratch the image side of the print.

Store prints properly; protect them from airborne contaminants, extreme light levels and high temperatures.

We strongly recommend frame with mount to protect your giclée (archival) or canvas print, fully.

When displaying prints in frames, mount them under glass to minimise exposure to humidity, cigarette smoke and atmospheric contaminants.

Avoid placing prints in bright sunlight. Don’t display prints outdoors.

Remove dust gently with a dry, soft, lint-free, microfiber cloth.

Never use water or cleaning products of any kind to clean your giclée (archival) or canvas print, as they will distort and/or fade the color of the inks.

There is no limit to the number of artworks that you can send in. We would appreciate it if you would send in the title and an underpinning/caption with the respective artworks as it is helpful for us to better understand your perspective when considering your work.

How long do I have to wait until I hear back from the curation team?

As we are trying to redefine the Indian Graphic Art scene, each new artist that we add, is a very carefully curated choice. The curation team receives hundreds of requests, so there is a waiting period of around 4-6 weeks.

What are the criteria for curation?

The curation is done on the basis of a number of things primarily focusing on: cultural relevance, technical execution, conceptual engagement, stylistic flair and flexibility in adaptation to products.

What is the difference between Exclusive and Curated Artists?

Exclusive artists are Kulture Shop’s exclusive marquee Indian & International Graphic Artists who receive a host of value added services including higher artist fees i.e. 25% , first preference for B2Bs etc.

Curated artists are emerging Indian graphic artists based in India or internationally. Their artist fees are 20% of the MRP. This label was created to accommodate such artists who are new to Kulture Shop and like to wet their feet first. With time and experience, they move to the Exclusive label.

Are there more labels within the Kulture Shop?

We also have the Brands By Artists label, where we stock the merch produced by the artist themselves. The percentage of share on MRP is different from that of the Exclusive and Curated artists. It is 65% for the artist and 35% for Kulture Shop.

If I become an Exclusive artist can I have different artworks on another platform?

Joining the Exclusive label means that you’re exclusive with Kulture Shop and will not have your artworks on any other India-based platform. International platforms such as Society6 are exempt from this.

Can I still participate in and hold exhibitions, art fairs and charity events under the Exclusive label?

Yes, you absolutely can! Do let us know beforehand whether you’re planning to participate in such events, we would love to promote your work!

How will I get paid?

Indian Artists and International Artists are paid through – Paypal / NEFT / Bank Transfer / Paytm.

What is artwork licensing?

Artwork Licensing is what helps an artist protect their artworks and makes sure that their hard work isn’t being ripped off by a copycat. It helps you create and maintain your brand as an artist.

What is the difference between upfront and variable fees?

An up-front fee is the amount paid by Kulture Shop to the artist for an artwork. Variable fees are the percentage share earned by the artist on MRP of the product. These fees depend on the commercial classification of an artwork.

What are indirect fees?

Indirect fees are paid to the artist when sales occur through third party retailers. Apart from the Bandra store we also have products at stores in other parts of the country. In this case, the artist fees are halved— Exclusive Artists earn 12.5% and Curated Artists earn 10%.

Can artists who live outside of India become an artist on Kulture Shop?

Yes, As long as you are Indian. We have some artists on the platform who live outside India.
