Dear Art Lover, Patron and Friend,
Kulture Shop shut down on 15 March, 2023.
For the past decade, we championed an Indian
graphic art movement with the support of
engaged fans and customers around the globe.
We had the privilege of representing 150 of the
best Indian graphic artists and created an
ecosystem for them to monetise their work.
This page is a homage to what we did together
as a community of artists and art lovers.
Kulture Shop was a carefully curated
collective of Indian graphic artists
from around the world. Out of over
10,000 applications, we chose 150.
We represented illustrators,
typographers, collagists and pattern-
makers.
It was the exclusive home of the best
graphic artists and a place for
emerging talents to be discovered.
Our goal was to update the global
perception of India through art for
the 21st century.
We sought to promote art that was
culturally relevant, fresh & modern.
Art that was bold, thought-
provoking and imaginative.
We believe that art is the best way to
express ourselves, be it an identity, an
aesthetic or a cause.
In addition to art prints, we sold
stationery, soft home furnishings,
accessories and t-shirts.
Every item sold had both artist details
and an artwork description.
Our innovative gallery/store concept
gave customers an opportunity to
discover new, affordable and unique
Indian art.
Especially popular among tourists, our
Mumbai stores became must-visit
destinations.
Our expansion plan to open stores
globally in artsy neighborhoods (in
NYC, London, Toronto, etc) were
interrupted by COVID.
Beyond stores in Mumbai, art and art
merchandise from Kulture Shop was
available online and was shipped to
over 80 countries.
The focus of the website was to help
visitors discover the artists, discover
art through tags, and understand the
context & purpose of the work.
Our website closed on 15 March 2023.
You can now visit an archive of the
site.
The Katalyst Collections were
collaborations with catalysts of Indian
culture. We paired our graphic artists
with those pushing the boundaries of
their own craft to create something
unique, magical and memorable. The
work was sold on Limited Edition art
prints and tees.
In 2014, we launched Katalyst
Mumbai, featuring collaborations with
a film actor, a musicians, a collector
and a spacecraft designer.
In 2015, we followed up with Katalyst
Music - a collaboration with
independent Indian musicians & DJs.
We ran 20 Sketchbook Sundays
across 2016-2019.
Imagine 50+ people from aspiring art
students to professional illustrators
drawing in their sketchbooks on a
Sunday afternoon.
Sketchbook Sundays was a unique
format which featured a different
Kulture Shop artist each time,
sharing their learnings, new
techniques and mentoring up &
coming artists and newcomers.
From 2017-2022, we curated 6
international art exhibitions.
This included the BOLD pop-up
exhibit at the London Design Festival,
showcasing 7 artists at this event.
Through five Indernet festivals in
Germany with our friends and
partners Masala Movement, we
showcased the work of 75 artists to a
European audience.
Without the exceptional word-of-
mouth and stores reviews, Kulture
Shop would never have grown to the
level it did.
We thank our over 20K customers
and over 80K social media fans from
all over the world that evangelized
the brand for us.
Especially the ones rushing in from
the airport before our stores closed
for the day!
Kulture Shop attracted people from
various fields (art & design, literature,
entertainment, fashion, science,
media, social causes). We’ve had the
pleasure and honour of meeting some
of our favourite public figures in these
fields who are shaking things up.
Some of the visitors included Fab 5
Freddy (hip-hop pioneer), Aziz Ansari
(comedian), Shruti Hassan (actor), Kal
Penn (LA, actor, author), Dev Patel
(actor), Chris Leacock aka Jillionaire
(DJ, music producer, formerly of Major
Lazer), and many more.
In 2017, we established Kulture Lab
to deliver high-end art & design
solutions for clients.
We did so by leveraging our top in-
house capabilities & impressive artist
roster that enabled us to create a
number of rich and memorable
projects.
Our clients included prime brands
across media/entertainment, music,
sports, automotive, FMCG and F&B.
The iconic K stood came to stand for
an alternative Indian culture, and a
rejection of the mainstream.
It also stood for an artist-first brand,
high quality and attention to detail.
And if you ever visited our studio or
stores, you would also appreciate
some good music, good vibes and a
lot of love.
To create something special takes
special people - a little crazy, super
passionate and fully committed.
Our deepest gratitude to our small
but committed team - Heena
Waghela, 1452 Studios, Divya Kulkarni,
Anmol Chacko, Sameer Khaire, Nilesh
Pal, Pratik Punvat, Arvind Kushe,
Suryakant Shende, Kiran Jadhav and
Sirajuddin Shaikh. As well as to the
other kind souls who helped over the
years.
You helped build a beautiful business
and upheld our values of supporting
artists, curation, quality and the
highest degree of ethics.
Thank you for placing your trust in us.
Thank you for the brilliant work.
Keep shining!!
We are humbled by the response from artists,
customers and fans upon hearing Kulture Shop
would be shutting. Here are some of them.
Our website kultureshop.in is now an archive of
the birth of an Indian graphic art movement and
the artists that pioneered it.
