As a collective of leading Indian graphic artists and proponents of the New Indian Art Wave, Kulture Shop believes that design can create impact. We’ve opened our doors to brands, studios, agencies and innovators to create unique design experiences.

Locus creates beautifully crafted, fold out, mini-guides to neighbourhoods in major cities across India. These pocket-friendly maps offer a handpicked experience of the city, a handy tool for tourists visiting the city for the first time who want an insight into the city life.

Since the opening of our Kala Ghoda store, Locus approached us to provide a graphic language of the Kala Ghoda area. Equal parts financial and arts district, Kala Ghoda represents the duality within the city of Bombay. With a mixture of old repair shops and modern design stores, the area is entrenched in the past but also boasts of a hipster enclave.

The iconic horse silhouette is used as the front cover and that dictates the tone of the rest of the map.

“Since Locus City Cards are displayed in 250 plus premium hotels in India to provide guests information on the city, we are extremely design oriented and information led. We couldn’t think of a better partner than Kulture Shop to collaborate on this project. Design is communication too and the team at Kulture Shop understands that. We loved the very first draft of the design which was presented to us and the series went from conception to production in no time. It was a delight working with Kulture Shop.”

The visual language uses a minimalist style to capture the architecture of the area. The colour palette of pink, purple and blue add a vibrancy to the map. Hints of vintage photography are used to remind us of what the area looked like.

Apart from architecture, the map also includes experiential elements – the area is filled with busy lawyers getting their documents printed and hustling around.

Kala Ghoda also houses some of the most iconic buildings in Bombay, many known for the Art Deco architecture style.
